General job application: cover letter example

When to use it

A solid base letter for almost any vacancy. For each application, rewrite the second paragraph around that job's requirements.

The full letter

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am writing to apply for the [job title] position at [Company name]. With [X] years of experience in [field] and strong skills in [key skill 1] and [key skill 2], I am confident I can contribute to your team from day one.

In my current role at [Current company], I [your main responsibilities]. During this time I [specific achievement, ideally with a number — for example, "grew sales by 25% in six months"]. The [requirement from the job ad] you mention is a core part of my daily work.

I am drawn to [Company name] because of [a genuine reason — the product, values, growth]. I believe my [your strengths] would help you achieve [company goal].

I have attached my CV and would welcome the chance to discuss how my experience can benefit your team.

Replace the parts [in square brackets] with your own details. Cut generic phrases; add specific facts and numbers.

  1. 1Keep it to one page — 250–350 words is ideal.
  2. 2Find the hiring manager's name if you can (LinkedIn, the company site) — a named greeting beats "Dear Sir or Madam".
  3. 3Don't repeat your CV — tell the story behind your one or two strongest achievements.
